Frequently Asked Design Questions
What can I do to create a warm, cozy atmosphere in my home?
There are so many ways to get cozy! Add texture to your room with fabrics that beg to be touched, like chenille, velvet, corduroy and even seersucker. Patterns, stripes and plaids can add interest, personality and warmth to upholstery as well. Increase the cozy quotient with accent chairs that that compliment or contrast the larger pieces of furniture in the room. Throws, area rugs and accents help complete the picture. Show your personality with books, photographs and mementos that reflect your interests and tell about your family. Finally, add layers of light to your room with floor lamps, table lamps and candles in addition to overhead lighting. Together, these elements will add a snug, cozy feel to any home!
I have an active family. What upholstery fabrics will stand up best to everyday wear and tear and still give the room some style?
Microfiber fabrics are durable, easy to clean, comfortable and are available in a variety of colorful options. Many blended fabrics, which combine synthetic and / or natural fibers, offer great design and stand up well to frequent use. Pattern fabrics are becoming more popular on upholstery and they can help hide wear and keep your furniture looking good longer. Leather is another family-friendly, durable option with lots of style.
I want to get new end tables for my living room. Is there a “proper” height that I should look for?
An end table should be no more than two inches higher or lower than the arm of the accompanying sofa or chair. This will give your grouping a cohesive look and make reaching for something on the table easier.
How can I avoid “cookie-cutter” decorating and create an interesting room without straining my budget too much?
First and foremost, build your room around something you love. It could be your favorite color, a quirky accent chair or a luxurious leather sofa that makes you feel like you are sitting on a cloud. Be sure to select accessories, fabrics and furnishings that reflect your personality and tastes, not just the easy or safe option. Cover a table with photos of family and friends, or feature a collection or books and objects related to your favorite pastime. Toss in a few colorful, even whimsical, accent pillows to tie it all together.
Flowers and green plants look great in the home, but I have absolutely no knack for gardening. Any ideas?
Nothing beats a vase of springtime flowers to brighten up your décor. However, one of today’s permanent floral arrangements will also do the trick. These realistic arrangements range from the small and subtle to big, lush and full. Don’t overlook the option of floral prints on your accent pillows or upholstery to add an air of perpetual spring to your decor. There are several great floral fabric options available today that range from classic Jacobean jacquards, quaint and sunny cottage correlates, to understated Asian-inspired designs.
